Crossborder engagement and cultural cooperation
cav_a: Catalan artists visiting Greek artists (Return phase: Greek artists >>> Catalan artists)

Produced by: www.anticteatre.com i www.vyrsodepseio.com

Vyrsodepseio, is a cultural space dedicated to contemporary art, together with Antic Teatre, reference point for cutting edge performance arts in Barcelona and multidisciplinary resource centre devoted to the search for and the creation, production and dissemination of visual and performing arts, are working together as part of the programme cav_a, Catalan artists visiting Greek artists. Now they are presenting the second part of the exchange in which Elli Papakonstantinou and the ODC Ensemble will present the hybrid performance Re-final countdown. 2004. Athens at Antic Teatre in 14th of February 2015, combined with other parallel activities.

For the Barcelona side of the programme the two organising entities, both known for their independence and activism, want to discuss the role of art  in relation to gentrification, a rising trend in both cities over the past few years.

The first part of cav_a consisted of two performances by Catalan artist Pere Faura at Vyrsodepseio and other activities such as meetings with Greek artists and post-performance artist-audience discussion, which took place in December 18th and 19th 2014.

Antic Teatre and Vyrsodepseio are both members of the European network of independent cultural centers, Trans Europe Halles (TEH), and together they are developing an artist exchange program based on research and innovation in performance expression.

This cav_a program is organized by Antic Teatre and Vyrsodepseio, supported by Ajuntament de Barcelona (Barcelona City Council) and Department de Cultura de la Generalitat (Department of Culture of the Autonomous Government of Catalonia),  and receives the collaboration of Trans Europe Halles.

[+] INFO

What is cav_a ?
This is a cultural exchange programme devised to share, understand and create awareness of contemporary creative performing arts practices in Catalonia, and in return learn about such practices in each host country we visit. By encouraging international cooperation between independent cultural research centres in the field of multidisciplinary arts, we hope to increase cultural perspectives and propagate new forms of creative expression.

Why?
The programme aims to stimulate creativity by basing artistic development on exchange and knowledge, bringing Catalan contemporary performing arts creativity onto the international arena, and transcending frontiers.

To this end we want to work with other, like-minded centres in direct collaborations on productions, as well as engaging in one-to-one exchanges between artists, cultural organisations, and even cities. Using performances, workshops and training, we will create a channel of information between artists, creators and arts professionals, moving them out of isolation and into the wider community, helping them to meet the changing social, political and professional challenges that face the artist as citizen.

Who is it for?
It will allow artists from Catalonia to show their work and their creative processes to the different communities that welcome them, sharing knowledge and interests with local artists and audiences, while opening the way for artists from our host countries to make the reciprocal journey to Barcelona, nourishing local contemporary performing arts with international programming, meetings and debates.

Ultimately our goal is to facilitate opportunities for artists of all nationalities to show their work to a wider audience, and to help them develop their relationship with the audience, making it a two-way process with a free flow of opinions that can lead to the creation of new languages of expression and the development of new ways of seeing and understanding contemporary stage arts.

Where?
It has Europe as its first target. But why stop there? The world is out there…

Thursday 12th February 19:00 - Free
Meeting with Catalan artists and locals about the topic:
"What is art in relation to gentrification?"

Gentrification is an urban transformation process whereby the original local population of a run-down or impoverished area or neighbourhood is progressively displaced by a more affluent one as renovation occurs.

Both Athens and Barcelona are being severely affected by this phenomenon.

Over and above their connections to the artistic sector, Vyrsodepseio and Antic Teatre maintain awareness of and involvement in the social and political issues affecting their immediate neighbourhoods and their cities. Because of this, an open discussion will be held on the current situation in both cities, and the role that art and artists can play in relation to the gentrification process.

Taking part in this discussion will be members of Greek company ODC Ensemble, resident at the Antic Teatre during this international exchange programme; local artists; and citizens or experts who can provide their experience, opinions or thoughts on the subject. The talk is open to everyone.

The results of this discussion will be integrated into the creation process for the show: “Re-final Countdown.2004.Athens” to be performed by ODC Ensemble on the 14th of February at the Antic Teatre.
