Born in Udine (Italy) in 1968, by the mid-80s he was drummer in a hardcore punk band Tomahawk.
In the late 80s he began his career as MC and Selecter, spinning hiphop, funk, dub, jungle d'n'b vinyls.
In 1991 he founded one of the most important miltant rap-crossover bands in Italy: Ariadigolpe.
As frontman and militant rapper, writing furious rhymes about Berlusconi's growing Regime, he released 2 albums, a 7" live EP and various compliations as well as performing at hundreds of concerts all around Italy, in Switzerland and in Slovenia.
Ariadigolpe played in all the most important Social Centres, squats, events and venues, as headliners or supporting other great Italian and international bands such as 99 Posse, Assalti Frontali, Casino Royale, Murphys Law and CPS, to mention just a few.
In 1997 he left the band to focus on his other passion: photography.
In the summer of 1999, Japo left Udine for Berlin, the Mecca for artists and avant-garde musicians. Alongside his work as a photographer, he has developed his career as a DJ playing in many venues, mostly alternative spaces and underground clubs in Berlin, Italy and London (Eimer, Escschloraque, Kulturfabrik, Yaam, Rototm Sunsplash, SO36, RoterSalon, 1001, Farbfernseher, Far East Film Festival and many more).
As a DJ, JAPO's musical spectrum is very eclectic: from 50s/60s jazz (to which he was introduced by his father) to 70s/80s reggae & dub, 70s funk to afrobeat, from 80s hardcore, wave & punk to traditional workers’ and political chanson, through diffrent forms of contemporary music like hiphop-rap, jungle, electronica (the first tape he bought was THE MAN MACHINE by Kraftwerk, 1978) and minimal-tech-house.
JAPO's djsets reflect this open musical view, sometimes as a patchwork, sometimes straightforwardly in one genre, but everytime refined and to the point.
